Number of Reported Cases
The graph below shows the alarming increase in the rate of reported cases of malignant mesothelioma in Australia from 1986 to 2001. The incidence rates of malignant cases have been increasing in Australia since 1965. It is believed that these high rates of mesothelioma are related to the extensive use and production of asbestos in Australia in previous decades.
